Black Sherif did not drop a 14-track event album. He dropped a 15-minute EP, it is enough to keep as the most streamed artist in Ghana.
SUN SHERIF arrived in early September 2026 through RBA / EMPIRE: six songs, two features, and a stated brief about intimacy. That is a different assignment from The Villain I Never Was and Iron Boy, the projects that helped turn him into Ghana’s default streaming name. Three weeks later the numbers are not empty. They are also not the same kind of takeover his earlier runs produced.
The live question on Ghana Twitter is narrower than “has he fallen off.” It is whether a quieter EP is enough to hold a crown that now has company.
SUN SHERIF is an EP, not a full album. The tracklist is short on purpose:
Expresso
Run Around
Forever (feat. AratheJay)
Jolie
Frontline
Love Again (feat. Full Blown)
Black Sherif framed the project himself. He has said most of the affection he needed arrived from afar, and that he still finds it hard to receive and keep intimacy even though he craves it. The EP, in his words, is a glimpse of that.
Press described a tonal shift: less street-sermon pressure, more melody and devotion. Expresso sits closest to Iron Boy. Frontline brings the harder edge back. Jolie and Love Again are the soft centre people keep arguing about.
He released it the same day Kweku Smoke put out No Days Off. That clash now sits under every chart screenshot.
Black Sherif is not fighting for relevance. He is fighting to look inevitable.
Spotify’s five-year Ghana report earlier in 2026 named him the platform’s most-streamed artist in the country since launch. He kept Ghana’s Spotify Wrapped top spot in 2025 after winning it in 2024. Mid-year chart accounts still had him first among Ghanaian artistes on combined global DSPs. Popstar spent 35 days at No. 1 on Apple Music Ghana in 2026, the longest run of the year so far.
That is the standard SUN SHERIF walked into.
The EP did move. Chart trackers said all six songs sat inside Apple Music Ghana’s top 14 in the first week, with Jolie and Expresso highest. Tune Stats posted an Audiomack opening week of 5.5 million streams and called it the biggest Ghanaian EP debut on that platform. By 24 September, fan and chart pages were circulating a combined 15 million streams on Spotify and Audiomack. Two songs, Love Again and Forever, debuted on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart. The project also climbed the Nigerian Apple Music albums chart.
Those are real results. They are not the same picture as nine of the year’s top ten songs, or a month-long lock on No. 1.
By the 22 September Apple Music Ghana Top 20 snapshot Pulse published, Kweku Smoke held the first three spots. Black Sherif’s new songs were still on the list — Expresso, Jolie, Forever, Frontline, Love Again, Run Around — but they were clustered from 13 down, not parked at the summit.
That gap is the conversation.
One camp is treating the EP as proof the machine still works. SUN SHERIF is already being called the most-streamed Ghanaian EP released in 2026 on Spotify. Expresso has its own repeat-listen faction. The UG signing soirée clips did what Blacko clips usually do: they travelled.
Another camp is saying the obvious thing out loud: this does not hit like the Sermon records, Kwaku the Traveller, or the heavier Iron Boy singles. The complaint is not always “bad.” It is “different, and smaller.” Some reviews praised the writing and still flagged the jump away from the Afro-drill gravity that made him a street staple. Forever keeps coming up as the song that feels most finished. The sequencing gets less love.
A third camp is using the same-day Smoke release as a scoreboard. Smoke took the album chart first and is stacking the daily Top 20, so in that reading the crown is already sliding. The counter is just as loud: career streams and Wrapped history are not the same as who owns Tuesday’s Apple Music screenshot.
There is also the joke that gives the argument away. One user posted that “Blacko has fell off” while admitting they had the EP on repeat. That is not a data point. It is the mood.
What we know
SUN SHERIF is a six-track EP released in early September 2026, after Iron Boy (2025) and The Villain I Never Was (2022).
Black Sherif remains Ghana’s recent streaming benchmark on Spotify Wrapped and on Spotify’s five-year Ghana ranking.
The EP charted immediately at home, showed up on Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats list, and posted a strong Audiomack opening week according to chart accounts.
Kweku Smoke is the artiste currently crowding the top of Apple Music Ghana’s daily song chart.
Listeners and some reviewers are describing the project as softer and less explosive than his earlier peak singles. That is a reception note, not a sales death certificate.
What we don’t know
Full, official year-to-date 2026 streaming totals across every DSP in Ghana, published by the platforms themselves.
Whether SUN SHERIF will still be feeding the daily chart in December the way Popstar and Sacrifice did.
Whether the next body of work returns to the heavier sound some fans are asking for, or doubles down on this lane.
How much of the current Apple Music picture is a same-week Smoke surge versus a lasting shift.
No public ledger yet settles “most streamed Ghanaian artist in 2026.” Wrapped and platform year-end lists do that. September is early.
Can he keep the top spot with this project?
He can keep a top spot. He is still the name other Ghanaian streaming runs get measured against, and the EP is already one of the year’s strongest Ghanaian projects on the platforms that posted numbers.
Whether he keeps the top spot is a different sentence. Daily Apple Music Ghana is not a Wrapped trophy. SUN SHERIF is also not trying to be Kwaku the Traveller. It is shorter, warmer, and easier to call “not a banger” if the only test is whether the streets pause.
The honest read three weeks in: the catalogue is still deep enough to hold him near the summit. The new music is charting without emptying the room. It has not reproduced the old sense that nobody else is allowed near No. 1.
Kweku Smoke is making that last part visible. Black Sherif has not answered with a single that sits on the throne for a month. Until year-end lists land, the crown is a live argument, not a closed case.
